a. There have been indications that AIDS was developed from chimpanzees. But, until recently, we have found that the specific chimpanzee that it came from is a subspecies only found in Africa. Now that we know this we will be able, hopefully, to find the 2% difference between us and our primate cousins. With that kowledge we will have the ability to possibly come up with a treatment, or even a cure. But, if the subspecies were to die out there would be no origin to run tests on. This would result in us basically being stuck in our tracks of research because you can never figure something out completely unless you trace it to the source!

b. Like I said before, it would hault our research on it. Because the only way we can stop AIDS is by being able to stop the chips’ virus, SIVcpz.

c. The latest findings might lead to new tests to discover viruses in nature that could cause human disease because we will find that: as people disturb more and more animal habitats around the world, there is a growing risk that they will be exposed to previously unknown disease agents; and transplanting animal organs into humans, should it become more common, would also be an avenue for infection.

d. People said “it should be a priority to look systematically” for the AIDS-like viruses in animals because scientists were now “forced to draw conclusions based on very small numbers of isolates.” Because “In recent years, Hahn and other scientists have traced a related human AIDS virus, HIV-2, to the sooty mangabey monkey (Cercocebus atys). Its native habitat is in the areas of West Africa where HIV-2 is most common. For unknown reasons, HIV-2 is transmitted less easily than is HIV-1, and infections have been limited to Africa in far smaller numbers than those recorded in the HIV-1 epidemic.”e. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v510/s1lverandc0ld/timeline.jpg
